| DEVELOPING BRIDGE IN LINCOLNSHIRE SCHOOLS Initiatives are taking place over many parts of the country to introduce children and young people to the card game of BRIDGE WHY? Educational research has been conducted to ascertain the educational value of learning the game and conclusions have been reached that it helps develop and support Numeracy HOW? Bridge is introduced in schools through the game known as MINI-BRIDGE. Pupils have to learn all aspects of the game but without the complicated bidding sequences that can be gradually introduced later. This means that from the outset pupils are able to learn to play the game where the emphasis is on a practical, fun and non-threatening approach but without losing sight of the fact that BRIDGE, like CHESS, is a competitive mind sport. WHAT CAN WE OFFER? A range of different initiatives can be offered to clusters of schools and individual schools. 6-8 week taster courses for whole classes of pupils WHO ARE WE? Lincolnshire Contract Bridge Association is a non-profit organisation, the object of which is to promote, organise and regulate the playing of Bridge throughout the county. There are 300 members who all play regularly in clubs around the Lincolnshire, as well as in county, inter-county, national and international competitions. The Association is affiliated to the English Bridge Union, which is the conglomeration of all 39 English county associations and which has over 25,000 members. Carol Garbett is a retired teacher/lecturer. She took up bridge over twenty years ago to complement her other hobbies of choral singing, orchestral playing and gardening. Apart from continuing to play bridge regularly, she teaches the game and works for a bridge company that offers weekend courses, holidays and cruises. WHAT NEXT? If you are interested
